Scared in a Storm

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

Hi everyone,

It's Mellissa - remember me? I'm one of your Children's Liturgy leaders and all of us leaders have been really missing you and the time we spend learning about God and Jesus together on Sundays. We will have lots to talk about when we can see each other again.

In the meantime, just because we can't go to Children's Liturgy at church doesn't mean that we can't still take part. Your parents or carers can lead the liturgy just like we do for you when you come to church! You can teach them the songs because you are all really good at them now. Remember to sing out nice and loud so God and Jesus can hear you all the way from heaven!

I know that everything that is happening now can be frightening and worrying for all of us so I wanted to share one of my favourite Bible stories that Pope Francis reminded us about to help us to remember that we don't need to be scared.

Mark 4:35-41 Jesus Calms the Storm

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you have no faith?” Jesus was not afraid because he had faith in God, just as we must put our faith in God and Jesus too.
