What is Pentecost?
The Christian feast of Pentecost occurs on the seventh Sunday after Easter and at the same time as the joyful Jewish festival called Shavuot. After Jesus’ death and resurrection the disciples were confused and anxious. Without Jesus they weren't sure of what they were supposed to do. That was until God’s Holy Spirit came down on the disciples allowing them to go out and spread the love and Good News of Christ with everyone. Because of this Pentecost is regarded as the birthday of the Church.
For our Children's Liturgy today, we read the Gospel John 20:19-33 and talked about the other reading for Pentecost which is Acts 2:1-11. I have attached part of the reading and the Gospel to help you complete the activity sheet.
Acts 2:1-4
‘When Pentecost day came round, the apostles had all met in one room when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting, and something appeared to them like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.’
Gospel - John 20:19-23
It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (Gospel passage taken from Good News Translation® and used with permission.*)
